Heading to campus is one of the biggest leaps there is, new place, new independence, new everything. Somewhere in the excitement is an easy thing to miss: now that you’re 18, your parents can no longer call the health center, talk to a doctor, or step in if something happens to you. The school can’t even share your records with them without your permission.
It’s a milestone for the whole family. And like every milestone, it’s not just the move, it’s all the stuff attached to it. A few minutes now means everyone can breathe easier once you’ve left for college. And remember, every path is unique; these are suggestions, not advice.
Make sure someone can help in an emergency
- You’re on your own now, so decide who can step in if you ever can’t.
- Name someone to make medical decisions if you’re unable to, a Health Care Proxy. Parents lose the ability to talk to your medical team on your behalf automatically once you turn 18; this is how they get it back.
- Sign a release with your school so the people you choose can access your records and bills, a FERPA release. Pair it with a HIPAA release (included in the Gentreo Health Care Proxy) so they can talk to your doctors too.
- Keep your ID, insurance card, and important documents together in your Gentreo Digital Vault, reachable from anywhere, including a dorm.
Sort out paying for your college expenses
- Compare aid, scholarships, and student lending options before you sign anything.
- Set up a student checking account and a way to manage everyday money on campus.
Cover your stuff and yourself
- Protect a dorm or apartment’s worth of belongings with renters coverage.
- Know how to reach campus health and counseling services before you need them.
Documents to consider
You don’t have to figure all of this out before move-in day. Set the foundation, store what matters, and Gentreo helps with the rest as the semester unfolds.
