Major Asset Purchase

A big purchase deserves a little protection.

A car, a boat, equipment, fine jewelry, or any high-value asset is a real investment, and like any investment, it’s worth a few minutes of planning so it’s protected, properly insured, and accounted for in the bigger picture of what you own. And like every milestone, it’s not just the purchase, it’s all the stuff attached to it. And remember, every path is unique; these are suggestions, not advice.

Buy with your eyes open

  • Look at the full cost of ownership, not just the sticker price, insurance, maintenance, storage, and the rest.
  • Compare financing across lenders if you’re not paying cash, and keep your emergency reserves intact.
  • For a significant purchase, a CPA can tell you whether there are tax implications worth planning around.

Check before you commit

  • Vet the seller and, for anything used, get the maintenance history, title, or certification.
  • Have a high-value or complex asset inspected independently before you buy.
  • Read the warranty so you know what’s covered and what voids it.

Protect what you’ve bought

  • Insure the asset specifically, a valuable item often needs coverage beyond a standard policy, and a high-value asset may need its own scheduled coverage and an appraisal.
  • For significant assets, consider titling them in your Living Trust or updating beneficiary designations so they pass the way you intend.
  • Photograph the asset and store the bill of sale, title, warranty, appraisal, and insurance paperwork in your Gentreo Digital Vault.

Documents to consider

A little planning now protects the purchase for as long as you own it, and makes it simple to insure, claim, or pass on down the road.

More enjoying it. Less worrying about it.
