Medicare – Open Enrollment

Your plan should fit this year, not last year.

Medicare’s annual Open Enrollment is a yearly chance to review and change your coverage, and it’s worth taking. Plans change their costs and rules every year, and so do your health and your prescriptions. The plan that was perfect last year may not be this year, and checking takes far less time than overpaying for twelve months. And like every milestone, it’s not just the deadline, it’s all the stuff attached to it. And remember, every path is unique; these are suggestions, not advice.

Re-shop before the window closes

  • Review your current plan against your needs for the year ahead, your medications, your doctors, and any health changes. You can consult a Medicare advisor to help you through this process.
  • Compare what else is available; premiums, drug formularies, and networks shift annually, and a better-fitting plan may have appeared.
  • Pay special attention to your Part D drug coverage, a plan that covered your prescriptions cheaply last year may have changed its list or pricing.

Look for savings you’re leaving on the table

  • A premium-and-cost comparison can reveal real savings, many people stay on the same plan out of habit and quietly overpay.
  • A Medicare advisor can run the comparison for you each year, often at no cost.
  • If money is tight, look into Extra Help (the Part D Low-Income Subsidy), it can substantially lower prescription drug costs, including premiums, deductibles, and copays. Many people who would qualify never apply simply because they don’t know it exists, so it’s worth checking whether your income and resources fall within the limits.

Keep your records current as coverage changes

  • If you switch plans, update your Emergency Card so it reflects your new coverage.
  • Confirm your Health Care Proxy still names the right person and reflects your wishes.
  • Refresh your plan documents in your Gentreo Digital Vault.

Documents to consider

You don’t have to overhaul everything, just check that your plan still fits, capture any savings, and keep your information current for the year ahead.
