Planning and Caregiving During the Holidays

Everyone’s together, a rare chance to talk about what matters.

The holidays are one of the few times the whole family is in one place. That makes them the natural moment for the conversations that are almost impossible to schedule any other time of year, about wishes, plans, and how everyone wants to be cared for. Handled gently, it’s not a heavy talk; it’s a loving one. And like every milestone, it’s not just the gathering, it’s all the stuff attached to it. And remember, every path is unique; these are suggestions, not advice.

Use the time together, gently

  • The goal is a warm conversation, not a board meeting over the turkey.
  • Pick a quiet moment, not the middle of the celebration, and keep it low-pressure, you’re planting a seed, not finishing everything in one sitting.
  • Lead with care and curiosity: what would each person want, and who would they want to handle things? People open up when it’s about their wishes being honored.
  • A Gentreo checklist or conversation guide gives the talk a simple structure, so it feels manageable instead of overwhelming, and a neutral facilitator can help if the dynamics are tricky.

Have the conversations that are hard but matter

  • Some of these talks are uncomfortable, and avoiding them is what causes the real pain later.
  • Talk honestly about end-of-life wishes, finances, and who will be in charge of what. Saying it out loud now spares the family conflict and guesswork down the road.
  • Ask about final wishes directly, burial or cremation, the kind of service or celebration, where they’d want to rest, and what matters to them. These are the questions families most regret never asking, left to guess in the middle of grief.
  • Be open about health issues, too, sharing what’s really going on with a diagnosis or condition means no one is blindsided later, and everyone can plan around reality.
  • These conversations are a gift. The discomfort of having them is far smaller than the heartache of not having had them.

Notice how everyone’s really doing

  • The holidays are often when you see what a phone call hides.
  • A visit can reveal that a parent is slipping, managing less well, more forgetful, less steady than they let on by phone.
  • If you notice changes, it’s a gentle signal to start planning while they can still take part, rather than waiting for a crisis.
  • Quietly check that elders have the basics in place: a Health Care Proxy, a Power of Attorney, and an up-to-date Will.

Put the pieces in place while you’re together

  • Help family members create or update a Will, and set up a Living Trust where it makes sense.
  • If there’s a trust, make sure it’s actually funded, assets retitled into it, since an unfunded trust can’t do its job.
  • Make sure parents and elders have a Health Care Proxy and Power of Attorney in place, Gentreo’s Health Care Proxy includes HIPAA authorization.
  • Find out whether final arrangements are handled, a preneed plan or funeral insurance can spare the family both decisions and cost later. If a plan exists, make sure everyone knows it does and where to find it; if not, it’s worth looking into. See Funeral Planning.
  • Set up a shared Gentreo Digital Vault, and make sure documents are properly signed and notarized, and that the family knows where to find them. A document no one can locate, or one that was never signed, can’t help anyone.

Tie up the year while you’re at it

  • The end of the year is a natural time for gifting strategy and any year-end tax planning, an advisor can help.
  • Schedule an estate-plan review with your advisor for the new year, so momentum from the holidays carries forward.

You don’t have to resolve everything over one weekend. Use the time together to start the conversation and plant the seed, and Gentreo helps the family carry it forward into the new year.

More togetherness. Less someday.
